Allometric growth and sperm competition in fishes
نویسندگان
چکیده
The allometric relationship between body mass and gonad mass in males of 23 fish species from 11 families was examined. There was no evidence of a single allometry for all fishes. A cross species analysis suggested a scaling coefficient of 1 04, which was significantly different from a previous study that reported a scaling coefficient of 0 904. A within species analysis generated scaling coefficients from 0 68 to 3 90. Furthermore, for those species characterized by alternative mating tactics, there was no correlation between the scaling coefficients of bourgeois-type males and parasitic-type males. These results are discussed in the context of the gonado-somatic index and its use in testing sperm competition theory. # 2005 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

متن کاملEvolutionary trade-off between weapons and testes.
It has long been recognized that male mating competition is responsible for the evolution of weaponry for mate acquisition. However, when females mate with more than one male, competition between males can continue after mating in the form of sperm competition. Theory predicts that males should increase their investment in sperm production as sperm competition is increased, but it assumes that ...
متن کاملFemale promiscuity promotes the evolution of faster sperm in cichlid fishes.
Sperm competition, the contest among ejaculates from rival males to fertilize ova of a female, is a common and powerful evolutionary force influencing ejaculate traits. During competitive interactions between ejaculates, longer and faster spermatozoa are expected to have an edge; however, to date, there has been mixed support for this key prediction from sperm competition theory. Here, we use t...
متن کاملNo Experimental Evidence for Sneaking in a West African Cichlid Fish with Extremely Long Sperm
Alternative reproductive tactics are widespread in fishes, increasing the potential for sperm competition. Sperm competition has enormous impact on both variation in sperm numbers and sperm size. In cichlids, the sperm competition risk is very divergent and longer sperm are usually interpreted as adaptation to sperm competition. Here we examined whether sneaking tactics exist in Pelvicachromis ...
